Aarron Walter at An Event Apart

Listening to Aarron Walter talk at An Event Apart about entrepreneurship and doing things “on your own time,” I was reminded by this quote by Charles Bukowski:

“If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery — isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you’ll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.”

This resonates with me, though, due to social pressures, it’s very difficult to do.

This is just a quick thought. Hopefully, I’ll be able to flesh this out later.

  1. mmm, this quote resonates with me too…have you seen the film Factotum? It’s in there somewhere. There’s an energy to CB that pulls at my heart, despite myself, I guess. I’m interested to hear what else you have to say.

When left to our own devices we tend to unfold, letting that happen can be all that is needed. maybe that’s one of the gift of isolation. To be your own persona – that is, to be curious about yourself first, sets the ball rolling. Being social is about getting that straight. When we don’t that’s when the pressure builds…, me thinks.
